What is Utharavasti?

Utharavasti (also called Uttara Basti) is a specialized Ayurvedic Panchakarma therapy. It involves the precise administration of medicated oils or herbal decoctions into the reproductive or urinary organs via the vaginal or urethral route. “Uttara” signifies “upper,” highlighting the therapy’s focus on the genitourinary system. This gentle yet potent treatment works to cleanse, nourish, and rejuvenate the reproductive and urinary organs, restoring their natural balance and improving overall function.

Procedure of Utharavasti

Pre-Treatment Consultation (Purvakarma) -A detailed consultation with Dr Hridya T Chandran evaluates your health history, dosha imbalance, and specific concerns. The most suitable medicated oil or decoction is selected. You may be advised to eat light, easily digestible meals the night before.
Preparation– Patient is advised to empty bladder and bowels. A Gentle abdominal and pelvic massage (Abhyanga) is given followed by a local fomentation (Swedana) using a sitz bath or hot water bag. Then vaginal cleansing (Yoni Prakshalana) with a herbal decoction like Triphala Kashaya may be performed for local purification.
Positioning-Patient is comfortably positioned in a dorsal or dorsal lithotomy position for precise administration.
Administration of Medication– Using sterile Ayurvedic instruments, medicated oils or decoctions are gently introduced:
Intra-vaginal: Fills the vaginal canal
Intra-cervical: Reaches the cervical canal
Intra-uterine: Reaches the uterine cavity directly
Typical dosage: 3–5 ml for intra-uterine application
Post-Procedure Care (Paschatkarma)– Instruments are removed carefully. A medicated cotton swab (Yoni Pichu) may be placed to retain medication and then rest is advised for a few hours to allow absorption. Most patients can resume normal activities within a day. Sessions are scheduled based on individual health needs, often 3–30 sessions, sometimes on specific days of the menstrual cycle
